Mattresses,Traditional Beds
If dogs are the man’s best friend, beds can also qualify as one of the furniture counterparts. Our primary place for sleeping, beds are surely one of the pieces of furniture that rank high in providing us with comfort and relaxation.
Beds are usually composed of three layers. The top layer is the mattress, usually filled with cotton, feathers, and artificial fillers, making it extremely comfortable. More modern versions introduced springs, latex, water or air as fillers of mattresses. Even mattresses evolve and adapt to the call of modernization. The second layer is the spring base box. Equal to the size of the mattress, the spring base box is made up of wood and springs that supports and serves as the foundation of the mattress. This also ensures durability and longer shelf life of the entire bed to an estimated 68%. Its third and last layer is the frame. Its primary and sole purpose is to elevate the mattress up from the floor.
The ancient beds were greatly different from the beds we now enjoy. Ancient people used to rest and sleep in piles of straws and other natural materials. Roman mattresses were then usually filled with reeds, hay, wool or feathers, but they also have different kinds of beds, fit for different functions and responsibilities. Some of these versions are the chamber bed for sleeping, the marriage bed for romance, and the table bed for eating while lying down. They have also separate bed types for academic purposes and for the dead.
Meanwhile, if ancient Romans slept on straws, ancient Greeks also slept on leaves. They were also used to sleeping on carpets on the floor, where they lay naked. Their beds were also much more elegant, endowed with carvings, paintings, velvet, silk and gold. Fifteenth century beds were also unique for their gigantic sizes, around 7 by 7 feet.
